Mindfulness Research
What is scientific research telling us about the results, effectiveness and applications of mindfulness practice? Below is a series of links to published studies and research into the effects of mindfulness.
Gut Research!
Gut research is the research we do ourselves every day when we try things to see how well they work. Please post your “gut research” to the comments section below. What has your experience of mindfulness been? What effect has it had on your life?

Find Peace and Happiness Through Mindfulness
Welcome to the website of Peace Through Mindfulness, Melbourne’s home of jargon free secular instruction in the practice of Mindfulness.
I am excited to be sharing with you something that has changed my life and continues to enrich it every day, the practice of being here now! If you look around this site or check out my latest book, “Mindfulness Plain & Simple”, I hope you will be pleasantly surprised with the simplicity and effectiveness of mindfulness. When I say mindfulness, I mean using awareness, of your breath, body and mind to anchor your attention in the present moment. To learn more, click here.
This one simple thing, learning to be present, has the power to transform your life, and all it takes is to keep practising.
While you are here, check out our workshops, or have a look at the articles. If you see something you like, or something we can improve on, please leave a comment, or send a message via the contact page.
You will also find links to other information about mindfulness practices, from spiritual traditions to mindfulness-based psychological disciplines. Feel free to suggest a link or contact us if you want your site linked to this one.
If you are struggling with painful thoughts and feelings, if you are ’stuck’ in the past or worried about the future, if you just wish you could take a holiday from your thoughts, then congratulations, you have come to the right place. Mindfulness can free you from your suffering. Learn more about Mindfulness.
I hope you enjoy the site and more importantly the practice of mindfulness. If you have a comment or a question, please add it to the discussion. Enquiries about classes are also welcome.
Enjoy,

Self Harm: The Silent Epidemic
On Sunday night, SBS screened a documentary called “The Silent Epidemic”, about self-injury. The documentary specifically looked at the use of MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) as a treatment for people who use self-harm as a coping mechanism. There is a preview inserted below:
This documentary showed scientific evidence, through brain scans, that mindfulness can change the wiring of the brain, and this was with an 8 week course, for someone who had been working with a psychiatrist for six years. The link to the documentary site is below. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the emerging world of mindfulness and mental health treatment…
It raised an interesting point for me: there is a direct connection between inside and outside, so I would guess that most people who use self-harm as a coping strategy would also be listening to self-harming thoughts much of the time. Self-hatred, self-blame and self criticism are also self-harm, as they cause the internal pain that people need to express. Once the ability to observe thoughts without reacting is learned, the content of thoughts is not so important, and even painful thoughts have less impact. The end of self-harm must start in our relationship to our thoughts, which is the pattern for all relationships. If we extend the definition of self-harm to include drug and alcohol abuse, problem gambling, over or under eating and other so-called “problematic” behaviours, it could be said that most of us self-harm in some way at some time as a means of getting rid of some difficult feelings or thoughts. Mindfulness can end this war.

Weekly mindfulness classes
From February 2010, Oli will be facilitating regular weekly mindfulness classes in Northcote. They will be one hour classes with a strong emphasis on practice, rather than discussion.
We will learn a different exercise each week, but each class will start fresh, so anyone can join in at any point without confusion. The aim of these classes is to allow people to develop their own practice with an opportunity for group practice provided each week.
Details can be found on the classes page.
